Wie findet man Halt in einer Welt, die bebt? Wie navigiert man durch die eigenen inneren Stürme? Wie können wir mit all den ausbrechenden Vulkanen im persönlichen Leben sowie in unseren gesellschaftlichen und politischen Landschaften besser umgehen?
„The Voyage Inward“, das zeitgenössische Tanzsolo von Monika Keller, ist eine Einladung zur Selbstbegegnung – roh, intuitiv, entschlossen. Das Stück entstand inmitten der heimischen Natur sowie auf der karibischen Insel Guadeloupe: ein choreografischer Selbst-Retreat zwischen Vulkanen, wütenden Wellen und der Stille nach dem Beben.
Eine Tanzreise, die weniger nach Antworten sucht als nach einem Zustand jenseits der Fragen.
Weniger Worte, mehr Bewegung. Weniger Müssen, mehr Sein.

How do you find stability in a shaking world? How do you navigate your own inner storms? How can we better cope with all the erupting volcanoes in our personal lives, as well as in our social and political landscapes?
Monika Keller's contemporary dance solo “The Voyage Inward” invites you on a journey of self-encounter – raw, intuitive, determined.
The piece was created amidst the local nature, as well as on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe: a choreographic self-retreat set between volcanoes, crashing waves, and the silence after the quakes. It is a dance journey that seeks not so much answers, but a state beyond questions.
"The Voyage Inward" is not a narrative; it is an experience - a transformation, a realignment of the inner compass. Because: "The only way out is in." (Sadhguru)


My source of creativity: nature, music, books, films, people, my cat and other animals. To create is my passion. In German passion means “Leidenschaft” and “leiden” means to suffer. I guess suffering can also be a significant source of creative outcome. My pieces are my way to express and to reflect. The decision standing at a crossroad, not knowing where to go to (“Crossroads” 2013); about leaving your home country (2014 “Zugvögel); the critical thinking about which opinions are reflected in the news (“Or is it Their?” 2015);a research about the hands and their physical and metaphorical meaning (“17 000 receptors” 2015); my first year in Israel (“Sababa” 2016), the cherishing of your body (“My Body” 2019); about the demons within you and the escape through meditation (“Moon Water” 2021); the live in the desert (“Moa” 2021); the art of knowing yourself and how to deal with changes, inspired by the tapas philosophy ("A State of Intensity" 2023)

Kannst du den Raum für mich halten, obwohl du anderer Meinung bist? Wie können wir stets den Raum, für die Meinung, den Schmerz und das Erlebte unseres Gegenübers halten?
Welche Eigenschaften müssen wir in der Beziehung zu uns selbst aufbringen, um eine Annäherung wagen zu können?
Anstatt sich von der Unlösbarkeit komplexer Konflikte lähmen zu lassen, sind Monika Keller und Deyaa Alsayad in einen bewegten, tänzerischen Dialog getreten. Inspiriert von unseren alltäglichen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen bis hin zum polarisierenden Nahostkonflikt, möchten die beiden ihre Herangehensweise teilen, sich in der Mitte zu treffen. Sich nicht vom erlebten Schmerz, ausgelöst von der anderen Seite, in einen hoffnungslosen Konflikt mitreißen zu lassen. Den Raum zu halten, ebenso die eigenen Emotionen während des Zuhörens zurückzuhalten und vor allen Dingen nich zu vergleichen, wer den größeren Schmerz erlitten hat. Ein ferner Krieg hat die Gesellschaft auch hier in Deutschland gespaltet und auf vielen Straßen gab es intensive Begegnungen, wobei Meinungen schnell, emotional aufgeschnappt und weitergetragen wurden. Die beiden Performer versuchen die Perspektive zu wechseln und sich nicht herauszunehmen, eine klare Meinung oder die Lösung des Konfliktes anzubieten. Die Beziehung zu dir selbst, sowie die Annäherung alleine und der Versuch gegenseitig Raum und Empathie für die andere Seite zu halten stehen im Vordergrund. Monika Keller hat sieben Jahre in Israel gelebt. Deyaa Alsayed kommt aus Syrien. Das Risiko, dass die beiden Performer, aufgrund der angespannten politischen Lage und ihrer gegensätzlichen Meinungen, es nicht schaffen, gemeinsam zu tanzen, sich zu vertrauen und den Raum zu halten, begleitete stets den künstlerischen Prozess. Eine Performance sollte unter allen Umständen stattfinden. Die Begegnungen der zwei Performern mit sich selbst und zueinander, hat die Zuschauer eingeladen, innezukehren und sich zu hinterfragen, was müsste ich aufbringen, um Raum halten zu können.

the directing of that intensity towards new beginnings.
ESH (אש = the hebrew word for fire) A STATE OF INTENSITY is a state of heat, of fire, “esh”, the heat we need to transform, to not resist the changes and to direct that created energy into the new. Through letting go and acceptance, the creation of a new beginning can become an art form. The piece shows the love towards a disputed country and invites the audience to swim in their own ocean of memories, reminded by the dancer's expressive motions and familiar songs appearing for a glimpse of a moment.
“In August 2014, I arrived for the first time in Israel. The Beatles' “Here comes the sun” was playing in my ears when I saw the shores of Tel Aviv from the plane and I felt like coming home. Nine years later, I have to leave. Looking back at an ocean of memories. Within seven years, I lived in a Kibbutz, a desert oasis, next to the sea in the old city of Jaffa, downtown Tel Aviv and next to the Yarkon River. With collected stones from all those places, I created a memory table which will accompany me on stage. I swam in salty, sweet, deep and shallow waters. The Dead Sea, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the streams of the Jordan River, cold waterfalls up north or hot streams down south in my beloved desert. They were all flowing together into my piece as inspirations, as waves of movement. I was in a constant “state of intensity” in a country which could be anyway called like that. A country I will always hold deeply in my heart and I am sending out love and hope for its future. Under the harvest moon, I am still in love with you…”

A movement and sound journey, inspired by Monika's experiences living in the desert for half a year. Beside the unique songs of the band “WEZN”, Dan Avidor accompanied live the choreography by Monika Keller with eastern healing instruments, like the pantam hang drum, Tibetan singing bowls, as well as the powerful gong and several other drums and bells.
The silence of the desert is difficult - you can’t escape your questions.
You face them every day, written on the mountains around you.
Every time you give yourself, into the time of the desert –
memories, fears, hopes are wrestling with each other.
The desert – wide, quiet, wild, dangerous. But it is:

About the creation process and movement research in the desert
The desert is a magical place. A place to listen to the wind, yourself but overall, to the silence. The time of the desert works differently. You are more connected to the sunrise and sunset and to the cycle of the moon. To jump on the wave of the time of the desert is a unique experience and the power of silence can overwhelm you. What does it do to you? What does it do to movement, to rhythm, to dynamic?
Watching how the desert animals move enriched my way of moving through space. How a snake crawls through the desert floor, how a scorpion stings, the walk of an akrabut. This combination of a spider and scorpion walk, how they shift their weight, the coordination of their fast leg work and hip movements and the rhythm they create. And how watching them leaves you with a combination of disgust and astonishment.

I collect many quotes about the desert, mainly by Paulo Coelho, Khalil Gibran and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Next to them I took phrases from my own writings, like the one above, and I want to play with making small compositions on these sentences. To explore which movement expresses which word and to play with the dynamic of the sequence while talking out loud the used phrase. The book “Never Not A Lovely Moon” by Caroline McHugh represents another source of inspiration. Where else than in the desert, do you really see the moon? “Whether it’s full or a sliver, hanging high or low, even when it disappears for two days and two nights every month, the moon’s always a miracle. Just like it’s never not a lovely moon, you’re never not a miracle.” Her book illustrates in a beautiful way the challenges of finding yourself “but the irony of finding yourself is, that you were never lost."
I found it interesting to think about what kind of people live in the desert, what kind of people escape to the desert and decide to move there.
How kids grow up differently in this environment. I was always impressed by all kind of stories I have heard on my journey there and my eyes will never get used to the desert view, the desert colors. I always feel within me this magical desert energy and whenever I need it, whenever I struggle or fight against the demons inside of me, I close my eyes and I see the bustang – the small palm tree garden in the oasis, the little lake, the mountains around. I feel the sand between my feet and the hot sun on my skin. But you can not escape your demons. The dark sides of ourselves, which cause us suffering, will also be a source of research for the piece. How to express those demons into movements. All the questions who are arising with them and how they change the body texture. How tension can lead movements into uncomfort, into frightening shapes we do not want to be in. Is it a conscious decision of the mind to get yourself out of it or how can the change of physical sensation already help you? Do I think to relax or does melting down my shoulders and releasing tension in the joints relax me?
Never Not A Lovely Moon

The short piece "moon water" and the solo "Never Not A Lovely Moon" leaded into a fifteen-minute piece which was performed by Inbar Elkayam, Maya Metzer, Nitzan Ben Shem and Monika Keller at Zichri Theater, Kibbutz Ga’aton and HaBait Theatre in Jaffa on the 26.03.2021.
The continuation of this movement research about the desert ended into a full evening performance “moa”.
Never Not A Lovely Moon (Solo)

Solo Version: It was the first short piece, created about the desert topic and which led into the "Moa" performance.
A solo she created during the "Dance Pro Program" of the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company.
She was mentored by Danielle Ohn and Ilya Nikurov.
"It was an emotional piece for me, because I reflected my gratitude towards the desert and the moa oasis which helped me to heal and to reconnect to myself. I returned after four years on stage and performed it at Zichri Theatre in March 2021." (Monika)

The contemporary dance performance "Sababa" was Monika's first full evening piece with seventeen dance students of the Karren Foster Academy. A piece, which reflected her experiences of her first year living in Israel (2014) and a lot of joy, passion and love to dance. She presented a powerful group dynamic and cherished at the same time the individual in finding your own movement color and your own way.
